Crafted with off-kilter textures and a luscious low end, Recalibrate fills your headspace with undiscovered moods and a reflective vibe. Samurai Guru’s latest LP is a ride through renewal that feels like a daydream—a creative new trajectory for the Redlands-based producer.
“Sometimes you have clear the drawing board and start fresh,” explains Guru. He took an eight-month hiatus from releasing music to find a better sense of self and to reset his path. “I went through life issues that I’m sure we all go through, with myself and family and friends. Something had to change in order for me to feel whole again, and from that time came this LP.”
Inspired by raw emotion, Recalibrate represents a novel direction for the producer. “I felt a lot more comfortable making this LP. Nothing felt forced or as if I were compromising my creativity for the sake that others may think it’s a little too weird.”
Guru has found his sound. “Let It Go” floats inside a breathing beat, easy but with an edge. Broken rhythms in “For My Dawg” push through the frustration of losing a friend, something Guru experienced along the journey of this album. Colors shine through the crackle in “Survive,” a chunky canter between glitches and strings. “Placemats” loops into a big, knocking beat that exhales into a dreamy euphoria.
“We can spend a lot of our lives not doing what we really want or being who we really want,” says Guru. “At times in life, we can all stray away from the direction we intended on going. But don’t give up. Think it through and come back even better.”
