This is a welcome development. Mike Grant’s Michigan-based deep house label, an irregular source of material from some of Detroit’s finest, has launched a “Classics” series, offering represses of hard-to-find and slept-on gems from the imprint’s sprawling back catalogue. This first volume includes a couple of stone-cold classics, most notably Andres’ 2002 deep house sleeper hit “Out in the Open”. Warm, deep, immaculately produced, hissing with vinyl crackle and dripping with easy soul, it’s one of Andres’ finest early productions. Then there’s Mr G’s superb tech-house rework of Grant’s own “The Struggle of My People”. Originally released in 2001, it wraps atmospheric chords, samples and melodies around a typically hustlin’ rhythm
