With spring almost in full swing in the northern hemisphere, we’ve picked 14 cuts of electric blue pop and crucial instrumentals defining a strain of soul in the cloud of contemporary electronics. There’s some super strong vocal pieces, notably from the Jam City-produced Kelela joint ‘Keep It Cool’, in How To Dress Well’s ‘Words I Can’t Remember’, and infectious pieces from Jack Dice, Morgan Zarate and James Ferraro. The instrumentals are just as affective, replacing “soul” in the conventional, vocal sense, with synthetic choral pads, blazing trance arpeggios, and dazzling sound design and arrangements, especially in the likes of Lars Holdus aka T C F’s remix of Dynooo, the blue burn of M.E.S.H.’s Promiis Mix for Renaissance, and the artificial timbres and contours of Guido or Visionist & Fatima Al Qadiri. Maybe it’s best summed up as a feeling without a name… you’ll know when it hits.
